The Provincial Government of Romblon, under the leadership of Governor Jose Riano, has taken a significant step in supporting waste management efforts and improving the livelihoods of small-scale garbage traders in Tablas Island. Through the distribution of locally made pushcarts, known as "garong," the initiative aims to empower waste traders and enhance their role in environmental conservation.

During a program held in Romblon, Engr. Dace Familaran of the Romblon Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) highlighted the importance of waste traders in managing recyclables and protecting the environment. The project, funded by the 2024 Gender and Development Fund, also provided pedal-powered tricycles, or "padyak," to selected beneficiaries.

The initiative's first phase benefited ten residents of Tablas Island, with plans to expand the program to other islands in Romblon next year. ENRO conducted thorough assessments to ensure that the resources were allocated to those most in need, emphasizing the project's goal of increasing economic stability for waste traders.

This effort reflects the Provincial Government's commitment to sustainable waste management and community development, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future for Romblon.
